What's Stress Got To Do With It?

If you were taking a relaxing walk in the woods by yourself and a bear started coming after you, what would you feel?

Probably terrified...but you would feel it in your body too, wouldn't you?

When you see the bear coming, your body's systems all shift to fight or flight mode to protect you from the threat. As a result:

  • You will feel wide awake

  • Your digestion will slow

  • Your heart rate will increase

  • Your muscles will tense

These changes all help you fight or flight (run away) so you can stay alive.

When the bear decides to go another way and you realize you are safe, what happens?

The threat is gone, and all those systems will start to move towards balance again.

Luckily you (probably) don't get chased by a bear when you go for a walk.

Unfortunately, your body responds to all stressors like there is a bear chasing you.

These include:

  • Work obligations

  • Home obligations

  • Day to day demands

If you are constantly feeling stressed, your body is constantly responding like there is a bear following you around.

While that physical response makes sense if we are being chased by a bear, it is not very helpful in coping with our typical life stressors. Over the course of my career I've come to realize that the systems that were advantageous when we were cave-people, are the same ones we have now, and they are not well suited to life in 2021! So what does stress have to do with it? When we are stressed our body releases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.

This leads to:

  • Mood swings

  • Trouble concentrating

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Trouble remembering things

  • Appetite changes

  • Sore and sensitive muscles (pain!)

While pain and stress can feed each other and feel like a can spiral in a good way and you can take control of stress AND pain.
